Tattingstone Primary School
Governor’s newsletter September 2018
Staff
Children returned to school earlier this month after the long, hot summer. We have several new members of staff and welcome them to our school.
- Mr Chadwick joins us as the new Kingfishers teacher,
- Miss Daines is teaching at the beginning of the week in Ducklings and
- Miss Sowter is a Graduate Intern working predominantly in Grebes class.
Upcoming events
There are lots of exciting things planned for the next half term. On Friday 21st September the school will take part in a ‘Jeans for Genes Day’. This is the annual fundraising event for Genetic Disorder UK which supports the 1 in 25 children in the UK living with a genetic disorder. There will also be a Macmillan coffee morning at the end of September - date to be confirmed. The week commencing 15th October will be Black History Week and this will culminate in a day of African drumming, storytelling, dance and singing for the whole school.
The school holds events to the community such as the Nativity, we would love to see you there, please keep an eye on the website for dates. Our open day will be held towards the end of October / beginning of November, look out for the banner.
Community involvement
We are proud of the high standard of reading in our school and research shows that reading has huge benefits to children, including, but not limited to, boosting their academic achievement. If you can spare some time each week to listen to some of our children read, please ask in the school office.
We also currently have a parent governor vacancy. The role of school governor comes with many demands in an ever-changing educational climate and careful consideration needs to be given before applying however this is a very rewarding role and gives an insight into the work of a school and education. As well as this there will also be co-opted vacancies next year as current governors come to the end of their term of office. These places are open to anyone with an interest in education and school improvement. Should you have any questions please feel free to speak with any of the current governors, they can be found on the school website, www.tattingstonecevcpschool.co.uk or on the board in the school office. Suffolk County Council also have an information page on their website. Alternatively, please speak to the head teacher, Mrs Derrett.
School premises
Ensuring the school premises are fit for purpose is an ongoing challenge. All money raised from the Alton Water Run in recent years has been ring fenced for capital projects. The PTA is currently considering investing in building additional space at the end of the school playing field. The idea is that the new space could either be used as a hall, indoor PE space, lunch room or a classroom. As the school has no hall, lunchtimes and assemblies have to take place in the Kingfishers classroom which is not ideal. Whilst we are fortunate to have the village hall across the road, it is not always available at short notice, for example when PE is disrupted by bad weather.
We would like to ask if anyone has any contacts in the building trade, or any ideas of what kind of structure could be built for us. We have thought about some kind of container conversion or portacabin. The building would need to be big enough to seat up to 30 children (if used as a classroom), have toilet facilities and a small kitchen area with hot and cold running water.
